American Kennel Club’s List of the Most Popular Breeds
The American Kennel Club released its annual report on the most popular pure breed dogs in the United States, and for the 27th year in a row, the Labrador Retriever is on top. The Lab took the top spot from the Cocker Spaniel back in 1991. Cocker Spaniels don’t even crack the top ten today.

Labs are the most popular dogs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Raleigh, Seattle, and Washington DC.
However, the French Bulldog is definitely making inroads on the Lab’s popularity. Frenchies took the number one spot in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and West Palm Beach. The breed jumped two spots last year making it number four overall nationwide, edging out English Bulldogs and Beagles.

The only city on the AKC’s list where the Labrador Retriever or the French Bulldog is not number one is Miami. The German Shepherd Dog is top dog in the Magic City.

Generally speaking, the most popular dogs in American cities are Labs, Frenchies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, English Bulldogs, Beagles, Poodles, Corgis, and Yorkies.

Urban Dog’s spokes-dog Bodhi was bummed to learn that Weimaraners remain mired in the mid-30s nationwide.
And what dog brought up the rear at 190 on the list?
The Norwegian Lundehund.
(Hm. Never heard of that breed. Sorry all you Norwegian Lundehund fans.
