The Running of the Chihuahuas
Annual Washington DC Event
If you happened to have been in Washington DC this past weekend, you may have noticed an international flavor in the air, more specifically the flavor of Mexico and Chihuahuas. From the tradition born from Americans’ appreciation for Cino de Mayo, the Fourth Annual Running of the Chihuahuas was held near the wharf in Southwest Washington DC this past Sunday. More than 94 different dogs were entered in this event which benefits Rural Dog Rescue, a local rescue / shelter in the District.
The run is the finale of the event, which includes costume contests, pet trick contests, and food and drinks for the pet owners to enjoy.
There are several versions of The Running of Chihuahuas held in several states. Besides Washington DC, Chattanooga TN, Albuqurque NM, and Winter Park FL all have their own Chihuahua running events, with entry fees going to help local shelters.
Check out this picture my friend, dog-walker extraordinaire, Christine Nassikas, took below from the DC event.

And here’s some video of the final heat!
