The Pet Friendly Chelsea Mercantile
Fine Living for Dogs on the West Side
The Chelsea Mercantile, located on Seventh Avenue between 24th and 25th Streets is one of the area’s blue-ribbon addresses. A number of famous people, including Lance Bass, Nick Jonas, Katie Holmes, and Marc Jacobs, have called the building home over the years, but friends of mine who live there say they’ve never been inconvenienced by the presence of any celebrities. They said “Never been a bother with all the celebrities… they’re friendly and mostly keep to themselves.”
The Chelsea Mercantile is the combination of three pre-war buildings; it has 21 floors and 354 units. There is 24-hour doorman service, a concierge, a fitness center, valet service, a children’s playroom, and a roof deck. There’s also a Whole Foods on site, so you never have to leave the building if you don’t want to!
The pet policy is very liberal. There are no restrictions for owners; renters must pay a $100 per month surcharge.

There are a number of dog day care centers nearby, including the New York Dog Spa & Hotel, a short walk away on 25th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue.

There are also many pet stores close by. Sometimes I think there are more pet stores than grocery stores in Chelsea. Pet Central is located nearby on 23rd Street.

And you’ll find the Downtown Doghouse on Ninth Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets.

The 24-hour pet emergency room closest to the Chelsea Mercantile is Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists. It’s located on West 15th Street right off of Fifth Avenue. According to the Vet Locator website, there are 22 veterinarians located within a mile radius of the Chelsea Mercantile.

There are two dog runs close to the Chelsea Mercantile. You’ll find “Jemmy’s Run” two blocks away in Madison Square Park. And a little bit further away, you’ll find the Chelsea Waterside Dog Run at the end of 23rd Street near Chelsea Piers.
