Postal Workers and Dog Bites in NYC

Manhattan is the top borough for US Postal Service workers getting bitten by dogs. The USPS reports twelve of its employees were bitten by dogs there in 2024. Ten Postal workers were bitten in Brooklyn; eight were bitten in the Bronx; and six in Staten Island. (Figures for Queens are broken down by individual villages.)

The city of Rochester had the most incidents in New York, with 23 Postal employees suffering dog bites in 2024.

All-in-all, New York state came in fifth nationwide, with a total of 322 dog bites.

California was number one in the US with 701 attacks.

The United States Postal Service wants the public to be aware of dog bite safety and prevention tips as we approach warmer days.

A dog bite can be a traumatic and costly incident for USPS employees and customers– but dog bites can be avoided with public awareness of best practices.

The 2025 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign takes place the month of June 2025, however, this important safety initiative should be practiced year-round. The theme this year is “Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track.” Spread the news of the campaign by using the hashtag #dogbiteawareness.
