I noticed the other day that a movie called Togo: The Untold True Story was released on the Disney+ streaming service. A while back I did a post on statues of dogs in New York City. One of them was a sad little statue of Togo tucked away in an obscure little park in the Lower East Side. Togo is the less famous companion of Balto, the sled dog credited with saving Nome, Alaska during a diphtheria outbreak in the 1920s. In reality, it was Togo who did most of the work! Well, Togo finally gets his due in this movie starring Willem Dafoe.
Here’s the exciting, heartwarming, tear-inducing trailer.
While I was on Disney+ I started looking for other dog-related entertainment.
I found a lot.
Here’s a (very) lightly annotated list:
Pick of the Litter (A terrific documentary about a class of seeing eye dogs. You can see the trailer in one of my recent posts on dog movies.)
Lady and the Tramp (A brand new live action remake starring Justin Theroux and Tessa Thompson. Here’s a link to my post about their meet cute at the Washington Square dog run.)
How Dogs Got Their Shape
Kitbull
Lady and the Tramp (The classic animated version.)
101 Dalmatians
Santa Paws 2 (The original is weirdly missing)
Pluto’s Christmas Tree
A Goofy Movie
Goof Troop
Frankenweenie
Old Yeller (>sniff<)
The Shaggy D.A.
Puppy Dog Pals
Canine Caddy
Pluto Mail Dog
Iron Will (Another sled dog movie!)
Pluto Lend a Paw
Turner and Hooch
Up (Not a dog movie exactly, but how can one ignore Dug and the other canines in this film?)
Dug’s Special Mission (A prequel short, of sorts, to Up.)
Dog Whisperer
World’s Greatest Dogs
Eight Below (More sled dogs!)
Greyfriars Bobby
Society Dog Show (An early Micky Mouse short.)
Enjoy your deep dive into Disney+. I recommend subscribing, if only to watch Baby Yoda on the The Mandalorian.
